When I had the idea for this piece, I was in my car at a stop light and was mesmerized by a tree full of orange leaves being blown about by the wind. In those moments before the light turned green and I drove away, I imagined that the leaves were simply sleeping butterflies and as they got blown off the branches they took flight. I think this image also ties together my sense of the fall as a beautiful part of the life cycle process that we get to watch each year. The trees pass through life, death and rebirth over and over. The butterflies also go through a similar process that also allows me to see them as symbols of spirit of the lives that we've lost being reborn in a different form. It’s about 11"x15", with ink and colored pencil on watercolor paper.
